Delta adds larger jets to Charleston-Atlanta route

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — One of Delta Airlines’ four daily round-trip flights to Atlanta from Charleston’s Yeager Airport will be upgraded to provide additional seating, more legroom and a first-class cabin option.

Starting Sept. 2, a Charleston-Atlanta flight currently being operated with a 50-seat regional jet will begin using a 76-seat Bombardier CRJ-900 regional jet with a first class cabin, “economy comfort” coach seating and on-board Wi-Fi service, Yeager officials announced Friday.

Delta’s daily Charleston-Atlanta service includes a morning flight using a 126-seat Airbus A319, the only full-size “mainline” jet now serving Yeager. With the 76-seat CRJ-900 upgrade, the airline is able to offer first-class service on two daily flights to and from Atlanta.

Atlanta is Delta’s largest hub, offering 970 daily flights to 205 destinations.

“The increase in capacity by Delta Airlines provides greater access to travelers flying to and from West Virginia,” said Ed Hill, chairman of Yeager Aiport’s governing board. “Having a first-class cabin is a great option for travelers using Yeager Airport.”

Serena the singer? Tennis star does karaoke

NEW YORK (AP) — Serena Williams replaced her tennis racket with a microphone at a karaoke event a week ahead of the U.S. Open.

The top-ranked athlete performed ”Diamonds Are a Girl’s Best Friend” on Wednesday night at Arena in New York City. She danced and swayed her hips in a mini dress as she sang the song in falsetto and attempted high notes.

Williams told the crowd before she began: ”I’m really nervous.”

She was joined by fellow tennis player Jack Sock, ”Orange Is the New Black” stars Laverne Cox and Uzo Aduba, ”Glee” actor Darren Criss and comedian Kathy Griffin at the event for Delta Airlines.

Williams, a karaoke enthusiast, called the singing sport ”my favorite thing.”

”I do like 80s, 90s rock because it’s good for my voice,” she said before she performed. ”The thing about karaoke is picking a song that works for your voice, that way if you sing like a cat – like I do – you can still sound pretty good.”

Williams is seeded No. 1 as she seeks her third straight U.S. Open title. She said winning is ”super important,” but added that there’s ”no pressure.”

”I feel good. I feel good. I’m looking forward to it,” she said. ”I am going to be relaxed and enjoy myself.”

Sock, 21, said he and Williams will play together during next year’s Hopman Cup tournament. He sang a lively rendition of R. Kelly’s ”Ignition.”

Aduba, who recently won a Creative Emmy, didn’t take the stage, but her co-star Cox drew in the small crowd at the private event with a rendition of Whitney’s Houston ”One Moment In Time.”

”Pease don’t put this on YouTube,” she said, laughing.

Cox joined Criss and Griffin onstage when they sang ”Say My Name” by Destiny’s Child.

”Everybody, Beyonce Knowles!” Criss yelled, introducing Griffin.

Dad, daughter back together after Delta mishap

CINCINNATI – A local father has been reunited with his daughter after Delta Airlines released the 7-year-old to the wrong person.

Kiante Butler, 37, put his daughter, Angelina Butler, on a flight from Cincinnati to George Bush Intercontinental Airport in Houston on Aug. 11 so she could visit family. While Delta says it has a “thorough unaccompanied minor policy” to ensure the safety of children, the airline somehow turned over the girl to her mother, Jennifer Lopez.

Lopez, 39, was released from prison in March after serving time for kidnapping her daughter back in 2008. She does not have custody of her Angelina.

The woman learned her daughter was headed to Houston from her mother, who still communicates with Butler.

In order to get Angelina back, Butler flew to Texas and went to the house where Lopez was staying. He was accompanied by a local sheriff’s deputy when he got his daughter back Wednesday, nine days later.

“Delta has pretty much admitted that their policy has not been followed and at this point it is just a matter of Mr. Butler trying to get his daughter back,” said Butler’s lawyer, Umeka Lewis.

The airline says it is conducting an internal investigation to determine how this happened.

Butler’s attorney said the local prosecutor will be reviewing whether Lopez violated the terms of her parole or custody agreement.

…Offered option of refuelling of planes
Ghana’s security apparatus and an official of government have prevented America’s Delta Airlines from using the country’s airport for an evacuation exercise in Liberia deemed to be detrimental to the safety of Ghanaians in the wake of an Ebola scare.

America is evacuating its citizens from Liberia because of the outbreak of the Ebola virus.

As part of the evacuation plan, Delta Airlines was engaged to airlift the U.S. citizens and it was decided that they should be brought to Ghana before going to the U.S.

However, the Ghanaian security apparatus and a government official, who does not want to be named, scuttled the move.

“Delta Airlines was fully made aware that Ghana would not allow such an idea to be carried out.

“In fact, Delta Airline was told in plain language that the role Ghana will play will be to allow the airline to refuel in Accra, but not to disembark passengers”, the official said.

Even with that, there were strong deliberations as to whether the airline could do so at Senegal, which is closer to Liberia as compared to Ghana.

As at press time on Sunday, all attempts to reach officials of Delta Airlines and the American Embassy for a response proved futile.

There were speculations earlier that Ghana had banned all flights from Nigeria and other Ebola struck countries.

“Ghana has never banned any flight from Nigeria”, an official government response clarified, adding:

“The only restriction placed on an airline is the prevention of Delta Airline from bringing the American citizens in Liberia to Ghana.

“The decision was in the best interest of Ghana because of the high incidence of the Ebola virus in Liberia”.

Delta Airlines was to undertake the evacuation without any contingency plan, a situation the Ghanaian security apparatus found awkward.
