Delta flight to Seattle emergency lands in Pasco

A Seattle-bound Delta Airlines flight had to make an emergency landing in Pasco early Tuesday morning after an alarm indicated a fire in the cargo hold.

The Boeing 757 was headed to Sea-Tac Airport from Atlanta when the warning light came on in the cockpit.

No fire was found.

The plane landed safely. None of the 152 passengers or crew was hurt.

A new plane was brought in to fly the passengers to Seattle.

Delta flight makes emergency landing in Washington

PASCO, Wash., Oct. 22 (UPI) — A Delta Airlines jet made an emergency landing at Tri-Cities Airport in Pasco, Wash., after an alarm indicating a possible fire went off, officials said.

All 185 people aboard the Boeing 757 were safe, Pasco Fire Department Battalion Chief Thomas Tviet said.

The plane was en route from Atlanta to Seattle Monday, and a second plane was brought into the airport to take the passengers to their final destination, KIRO-TV, Seattle, reported Tuesday.

After the alarm went off in the cockpit indicating a possible fire in the cargo bay, crew inspected the plane and found no evidence of fire, CBS News reported.

Two planes make precautionary emergency landings on Monday night

Two Delta Airlines flights made unplanned landings Monday night in unrelated incidents.

A Delta flight from Atlanta made an emergency landing at Tri-Cities Airport in Washington state after a false alarm with one of the plane’s cargo bay sensors on Monday night.

The plane was carrying 183 passengers to Seattle when it made the emergency landing, according to local NBC News affiliate KNDU. The flight’s captain said that there was no fire on board the Boeing 757, the station reported.

An indicator light in the plane’s cargo bin went off, Delta Airlines spokeswoman Sarah Lora said on Tuesday. The plane landed as a precaution, she said.

No one was injured in the incident and another plane took the passengers of Flight 2329 to their destination early on Tuesday morning.

In a separate incident on Monday night, a Delta flight to Atlanta returned to Syracuse’s Hancock International Airport after smoke was seen in the area of a coffee machine.

The aircraft’s pilots said there was no indication of any additional fire aboard the plane, according to air traffic control recordings. A smoke extinguisher was used after smoke was spotted “coming from a coffee pot,” a pilot says in the recordings.

None of the plane’s 121 passengers were injured in the incident, according to the Delta spokeswoman. A flight arrived in Atlanta at about 1:40 a.m. local time on Tuesday, according to Delta’s website.

Is Delta Airlines (DAL) Poised to Beat Earnings Estimates?

We expect premier passenger carrier,
Delta Airlines Inc.

(
DAL

), to beat expectations when it reports third-quarter 2013
results on Oct 22, before the market opens.

Why a Likely Positive Surprise?

Our proven model shows that DAL is likely to beat earnings
because it has the right combination of two key components.

Positive Zacks ESP:

Earnings ESP

which represents the difference between the Most Accurate
estimate and the Zacks Consensus Estimate, stands at +2.24%. This
is a meaningful and leading indicator of a likely positive
earnings surprise.

Zacks Rank:

DAL currently has a Zacks Rank #2. Note that stocks with Zacks
Ranks of #1 (Strong Buy), 2 (Buy) or 3 (Hold) have a
significantly higher chance of beating earnings.

The combination of DAL’s Zacks Rank #2 and +2.24% ESP makes us
confident of a positive earnings beat this release.

What is Driving the Better-Than-Expected
Earnings?

We expect an impressive performance from Delta this quarter
owing to better service offering, capacity discipline and
customer-focused initiatives. Introduction of services and
announcement of several new routes connecting various domestic
and international destinations will propel growth. Additionally,
Delta recently got the U.S. Department of Transportation’s
approval to tie up with Virgin Atlantic, which will give the
Atlanta-based carrier a strong foothold in the trans-Atlantic
market.

Significant competition in several of its hub airports remain
one of the major challenges for Delta. Additionally, the carrier
competes with foreign operators traveling to international
destinations, as well as between foreign points. The company also
remains vulnerable to weak economic conditions as the major
countries around the world continue to improve gradually from a
financial crisis.

Other Stocks to Consider

Other companies you may want to consider on the basis of our
model which shows that these have the right combination of
elements to post an earnings beat this quarter include:

Republic Airways Holdings Inc.

(
RJET

) with earnings ESP of +2.82% and Zacks Rank #1 (Strong Buy).

U.S. Airways Group Inc.

(
LCC

) with earnings ESP of +6.54% and Zacks Rank #2 (Buy).

Álaska Air Group Inc.

(
ALK

) with earnings ESP of +1.91% and Zacks Rank #2 (Buy).

NAIA bomb threat

By ANJO PEREZ

Manila, Philippines – Airport bomb disposal experts had their hands full early yesterday morning when they received a call informing them that an explosive device was reportedly planted on a US-bound flight via Japan.

Shortly after 3 a.m. yesterday, members of the Philippine National Police- Aviation Security Group (PNP-ASG) Special Operations Unit (SOU) scrambled to the tarmac of the Ninoy Aquino International Airport where the Delta Airlines aircraft was docked after receiving information that a bomb was set to explode inside the aircraft at 5 a.m.

According to airport authorities, an airport employee stationed at the baggage conveyor area received a phone call from a man who informed him that someone had planted a bomb inside Delta Airlines flight DL172. The flight was bound for the New York City via Narita, Japan and was scheduled to depart at 8:04 a.m.

The personnel who received the call immediately informed the Airport Police Department about the bomb threat. Airport police in turn called the PNP-ASG.

Ten minutes after the initial call, another call was made by the same caller and introduced himself as a
concerned citizen, saying, “kaibigan ko ang gumawa ng bomba.”

The airport authority dispatched reinforcement to the tarmac and posted additional bomb-sniffing K9 units to the entry gates as well as the baggage build-up area, where bags are held prior to being loaded into the aircraft cargo hold.

The SOU scoured the entire cabin of the Boeing 747-400 aircraft including its cargo hold for any trace of explosives. Bomb-sniffing dogs also searched through the entire cargo and baggage but found no explosives.

Airport authorities also searched the other Delta Airlines aircraft, flight DL630 which was bound for Detroit, Michigan via Nagoya, Japan just to make sure that there were no explosives onboard the aircraft.

After the search proved negative for explosives, airport authorities cleared the two flights for takeoff. Flight DL630 which was scheduled to leave at 6:45 a.m. was delayed by half an hour while DL172 was able to depart on time.

Bomb hoax at Manila airport slightly delays takeoff of US jetliner

MANILA, Philippines – A bomb threat believed to have come from within the Ninoy Aquino International Airport complex sent police teams sweeping through a US-bound jumbo jet before dawn Saturday, nearly five hours before its scheduled flight.

Delta Airlines flight DL-172 bound for New York with a stopover in Narita, Japan, took off after a slight delay at 8:21 a.m. after police declared the Boeing 747 clear of any threat, a report from the Manila International Airport Authority said.

The plane was originally scheduled for takeoff at 7:55 a.m. Passengers boarded the aircraft without incident, but additional bomb-sniffing dogs were placed at the Delta Airlines’ check-in counter, departure gate and the airport ramp.

Information from the MIAA said personnel manning baggage conveyors at NAIA Terminal 1′s arrival hall received a call at 3 a.m. Saturday saying the Delta aircraft “will explode at 5 a.m.”

The caller spoke in Filipino and used a local line, indicating that the call was made from within the NAIA complex, said an MIAA source who requested anonimity for lack of authority to speak on the matter. A check of MIAA’s phone system showed that no such call came through the trunkline.

The caller made two calls, 10 minutes apart, said the source, who was at NAIA 1 at the time and was privy to police response to the threat.

The call came just as two Delta planes, both parked at the NAIA ramp overnight, were being readied for their early-morning flights.

Apart from Flight 172, Delta’s Manila-Nagoya-Detroit flight DL 630, also a 747 that was set for an earlier flight, was also at the tarmac and already open for check-in at the time.

Teams from the Philippine National Police and the separate Airport Police Department deployed K9 units to inspect both aircraft. The sweep took around an hour and the inspection cleared the two planes of any threat.

MIAA said the threat did not cause any disruption to the operations at the terminal or alarm the passengers.

An investigation was underway to trace the caller.

Delta Airlines flight to US delayed after receiving ‘bomb threat’

Jose Angel Honrado, Manila International Airport Authority (MIAA) general manager, said airport personnel received the call at around 3:40 am Saturday and said that the bomb was planted in the cargo section of the plane.

“As a standard procedure, the Airport Police responded, the PNP Aviation Security Group responded, chineck yung cargo sa eroplano, wala naman nakitang bomb,” Honrado said.

Delta Airlines flight 171 was scheduled for departure at 6:45 am but was able to fly out at 7:21 am due to the incident. (PNA)
