United Airlines was operating two versions of the Boeing 737 family – the Boeing 737-800 and 900 and the Boeing 737 Max 8 and 9.
The 737-800s are not the same as the Max aircraft.
United only had 14 B737 Max in operation which have now been grounded because of the FAA order.
In a statement from United Airlines spokesperson, Rachael L. Rivas, she told eTurboNews:
“Nothing is more important to United Airlines than the safety of our customers and employees. As we have said since Sunday, we have been in close contact with investigators as well as Boeing to share data and fully cooperate with regulatory authorities.
“We will comply with the FAA’s order and will ground our 14 737 MAX aircraft. We will remain in close touch with authorities as their investigation continues.
“Since Sunday, we have been working diligently on contingency plans to prepare our fleet to minimize the impact to customers. Our MAX aircraft account for roughly 40 flights a day, and through a combination of spare aircraft and rebooking customers, we do not anticipate a significant operational impact as a result of this order. We will continue to work with our customers to help minimize any disruption to their travel.”

Team of 3 guide dogs to lead blind runner at United Airlines NYC Half – WABC
NEW YORK CITY (WABC) — Guide dogs are familiar companions for humans who need them, and now, a team of running guide dogs is about to break another barrier.
Thanks to permission from New York Road Runners, a relay of three dogs are on course to do something that’s never been done before — cross the finish line and collect a medal for guiding a blind runner 13.1 miles.
Tom Panek has used human guides to run races in the past, and we first met him in 2014 when he ran the Boston Marathon to raise money for Guiding Eyes for the Blind. The non-profit offers guide dogs to those in need.
Guiding Eyes now has its own running team, and guide dog Gus joined Panek and Eyewitness News meteorologist Amy Freeze for a recent run.
“These are their running shoes,” Panek said. “The socks to keep them from getting blisters…They have their own running gear just like we do.”
And these pups are going the distance to lead humans who cannot see but want to run.
“There’s a big demand from people who have vision loss that want to be active, want to be well like the rest of us, want to get out there with their dog,” Panek said.
Gus is joined on the team by Waffle and her brother Westly, and for the first time ever, the relay of three guide dogs will each run about five miles and take Panek to the finsish line of the 2019 United Airlines NYC Half Marathon.
“The biggest obstacle is getting it done at a faster pace, moving with the dog and keeping our footwork together,” Panek said. “Like everybody else, one step at a time.”
While other runners have their sight to navigate curbs, potholes and other runners, Panek has the dog.
“It’s a long race, but dogs are running creatures and they love to move and run,” he said. “A lot of times, when we’re walking our dogs, we are holding them back. They want to get out and have fun, and they love it…keeping me on course and getting me across the finish line.”
Raised by volunteers and trained to run this distance, these dogs are about to become part of history.
“These dogs will have on their names on own bibs,” Panek said. “And they’ll medal at the end, so cheer these dogs on.”
After all, they represent animals that serve humans in ways that make everything seem possible.
“No matter what your challenge or disability is, you can do it,” Panek said. “You can do it, one step at a time.”

United Airlines Tests New Tool At DIA To Keep Passengers From Missing Connections
DENVER (CBS4)– United Airlines is testing a new tool at Denver International Airport. The tool is designed to make sure customers don’t miss their connecting flights.
United is using new software to help employees decide whether to hold a flight.
The airline says the program only has a minimum impact on passengers. That’s because airlines typically only hold planes that will still arrive on time even if it departs a little late.
United says the program has already saved thousands of connections. The plan is to roll out the tool in other airports later this year.
United Airlines extends HQ lease at Willis Tower until 2033
United Airlines will keep its headquarters in Willis Tower for at least another 14 years, after being courted by owners of megadevelopment sites along the Chicago River.
The Chicago-based airline said it has extended its lease in Chicago’s tallest skyscraper until 2033, following a year-and-a-half search for a potential new headquarters campus in Chicago.
United’s decision to stay put takes the airline out of play for developers looking for tenants to kick off some of the biggest mixed-use developments ever proposed in the Chicago.
The company will revamp, in stages, its 850,000 square feet of space on 16 floors of the former Sears Tower. United will add a 30,000-square-foot cafeteria and roof deck on the fourth floor.
United’s lease extension is a sigh of relief for New York-based Blackstone Group, which paid a Chicago-record $1.3 billion for the 110-story tower in 2015 and is in the late stages of a $500 million renovation and expansion.
Amid major upgrades by Blackstone’s EQ Office unit, United looked at several properties where it could have moved its corporate offices and operations center.
The airline gave serious looks to three of the sites that Amazon toured during its well-publicized search for a second headquarters site, according to real estate sources. Those sites were The 78, Related Midwest’s planned 62-acre development along the river between the South Loop and Chinatown; Lincoln Yards, Sterling Bay’s 55-acre plan proposed on the river along Lincoln Park and Bucktown; and the River District, a vision by broadcast company Tribune Media to redevelop 37 acres of riverfront land just north of downtown.
Gavin Molloy, United’s vice president of corporate real estate, declined to confirm which sites the airline considered, but he acknowledged the company’s search was helped by the legwork that developers had already put into trying to landing the Amazon project, dubbed HQ2. United ultimately determined it was more cost-effective to stay at Willis Tower, even after investing hundreds of millions of dollars to renovate its floors, Molloy said.
Having viable development sites created leverage in negotiating the extension in Willis Tower, he said. United had an option to terminate its lease in 2023. “The alternatives that were available clearly helped in the financial negotiation with Willis Tower,” Molloy said.
Willis Tower’s proximity to public transportation was a key factor in remaining, because 65 percent of the company’s Chicago employees live in the suburbs, Molloy said.
United was represented in the search by brokers Molly Carroll, Andrea VanGelder, Kevin Rogers and Alexa Jennings of Jones Lang LaSalle. The landlord is represented by Jamey Dix, Nikki Kern and Jon-David Parcheta of Telos Group.
United, whose lease had been set to expire in 2028, is the largest private office tenant in downtown Chicago, according to JLL.
Naming rights to the tower are not currently available, Molloy said, but he didn’t rule out eventually putting United’s name on the 1,451-foot-tall skyscraper, which was the world’s tallest from 1974 to 1998.
“It’s something that’s been discussed but we’re not making any announcements on that now,” Molloy said.
Sears Tower’s naming rights were sold by a previous owner of the building to London-based Willis Group Holdings (now called Willis Towers Watson) in 2009.

United has been a tenant in Willis Tower for about a decade, and moved its headquarters there in 2013. The company merged with Continental Airlines in 2010.
United plans to redesign its floors in phases from 2020 to 2023, Molloy said. The company will add five interior staircases between some floors. The redesigned space will have fewer walls and more meeting and collaboration areas, he said.
As United reconfigures space, 86 employees from the former headquarters at 77 W. Wacker Drive and 410 workers from another site in Elk Grove Village will join the 4,731 workers currently in Willis Tower, the company said.
United will leave its data center in Elk Grove Village but hopes to sell the rest of the suburban campus, Molloy said.
Private-equity giant Blackstone’s expansion of the lower floors of Willis Tower will create about 300,000 square feet of new restaurant, retail and entertainment space. Tenants already signed include a more than 14,000-square-foot Urbanspace food hall and 55,000 square feet of corporate meeting and events space from Convene.
Near the tip of the skyscraper, there also are expected to be new attractions for the Skydeck.
Willis Tower is home to 15,000 workers daily and more than 1.7 million visitors annually.

Presque Isle airport remains closed a week after a plane skid off runway
One week after a landing accident halted passenger travel to and from the Presque Isle International Airport, a timeline for resuming travel remained unclear, but United Airlines has vowed to assist affected flyers until the airport reopens.
On about 11:30 a.m. March 4, a 50-seat Embraer 145 jet operated by CommuteAir for United Airlines made its second attempt at landing and slid off the runway at Presque Isle International Airport, leaving several people with minor injuries and badly damaging the plane.
In the days that followed, the National Transportation Safety Board started an investigation and had the plane removed from the scene.
Terry Williams, a spokesman for the National Transportation Safety Board, said the agency will likely have a preliminary report on the incident released within 10 days, although this will not have an analysis or a determination of cause. The full investigation and its report will be complete within a year, he said.
Meanwhile, it remains unclear when passenger travel will resume at the airport. Freight planes resumed flying the day after the accident, but neither local officials nor United Airlines could offer a timeline for passenger flights resuming.
Kim Smith, public information officer for the city of Presque Isle, said that the airport did not know when passenger flights could resume and did not have any further information as of Monday.
Following the accident and passenger air shutdown, United Airlines has offered affected customers a travel waiver that currently covers travel dates through March 15. A United spokesperson said the waiver will be extended until the airport reopens.
Under this offer, posted on United’s travel notices page, change fees and differences in fare will be waived for new United flights departing between March 4 and April 1 between the same cities. The waiver also states that for rescheduled travel departing after April 1, the change fee will be waived but a difference in fare may apply.
United Airlines, through CommuteAir, has served Presque Isle with daily flights to and from Liberty International Airport in New Jersey since July 2018. The United service replaced PenAir’s service to Boston under the federal Essential Air Services program that subsidizes air travel in rural communities. United Airlines receives a $4.78 million annual subsidy for the service, which provides 12 round-trip flights per week, under a contract which runs through June 2020.

United Airlines Revamps Meetings Product
United Airlines is beefing up its offerings for the meetings and events industry. Central to this effort is the launch of a new United Meetings product, which is available on the airline’s business portal, United Jetstream.
“The needs we have been hearing loud and clear: we have to have some more flexible offerings, more rewarding offerings and offerings that are faster to market and easier to transact,” United SVP of Sales Jake Cefolia tells International Meetings Review of the thinking behind the new product. “We heard that and took that feedback to heart.”
Cefolia says that the airline has spent the better part of the last year completely redesigning its meeting product. Now, the new portal will allow meeting planners to make a request and receive flexible discounts for participants within one business day, and quickly turn travel funds into rewards such as beverage coupons, travel certificates, United Club passes and memberships, and more.
“Since it’s housed on Jetstream, it takes a matter of minutes to self-serve,” Cefolia says. “There’s no call that needs to be made, and nothing that needs to be sent in for redemption.”
The site also includes a personalized dashboard that allows meeting planners to track the number of tickets booked, flights flown, amenities funds earned and the number of tickets needed for the next amenity award.
Another key feature: “We’re going to be allowing all meetings volume to count toward corporate contract compliance,” says Cefolia.
United Meetings is available to organizations worldwide hosting a meeting of 10 or more participants. Discounts are extended to travel on the airline’s Star Alliance and joint venture partners.
The new product is part of a broader shift in the way in which the airline views sales, Cefolia says.
“We’re viewing customers more as strategic partners, rather than the antiquated buyer / seller relationship,” Cefolia says.

United Airlines crew declares emergency after engine trouble on 737-900
HOUSTON (AP) — A United Airlines crew declared an emergency when an engine on a Boeing 737-900 carrying 180 people shut down as the aircraft descended into Houston, federal authorities said Monday.
Flight 1168 was carrying 174 passengers and six crew members late Sunday when the engine trouble began near George Bush Intercontinental Airport. It was traveling from Newark Liberty International Airport in New Jersey.
The emergency came the same day an Ethiopian Airlines’ Boeing 737 Max 8 crashed, killing 157 people. Another plane of the same model crashed last October in Indonesia, killing 189. The 737 Max 8 is a newer model that’s part of a fleet meant to replace the 737-900 and other Boeing aircraft.
One passenger on the United flight, Chris Morrison, told Houston media outlets that he heard a loud bang, felt a strong vibration and saw a flash of light.
Philip Morrow, also a passenger, said he saw flames coming from the engine.
Federal Aviation Administration spokesman Lynn Lunsford said emergency responders found no evidence of fire or smoke and that crews were investigating the aircraft Monday.
United spokeswoman Rachael Rivas said some people suffered minor injuries while using inflatable slides to evacuate the plane.
