Manila, Philippines – Airport bomb disposal experts had their hands full early yesterday morning when they received a call informing them that an explosive device was reportedly planted on a US-bound flight via Japan.

Shortly after 3 a.m. yesterday, members of the Philippine National Police- Aviation Security Group (PNP-ASG) Special Operations Unit (SOU) scrambled to the tarmac of the Ninoy Aquino International Airport where the Delta Airlines aircraft was docked after receiving information that a bomb was set to explode inside the aircraft at 5 a.m.

According to airport authorities, an airport employee stationed at the baggage conveyor area received a phone call from a man who informed him that someone had planted a bomb inside Delta Airlines flight DL172. The flight was bound for the New York City via Narita, Japan and was scheduled to depart at 8:04 a.m.

The personnel who received the call immediately informed the Airport Police Department about the bomb threat. Airport police in turn called the PNP-ASG.

Ten minutes after the initial call, another call was made by the same caller and introduced himself as a
concerned citizen, saying, “kaibigan ko ang gumawa ng bomba.”

The airport authority dispatched reinforcement to the tarmac and posted additional bomb-sniffing K9 units to the entry gates as well as the baggage build-up area, where bags are held prior to being loaded into the aircraft cargo hold.

The SOU scoured the entire cabin of the Boeing 747-400 aircraft including its cargo hold for any trace of explosives. Bomb-sniffing dogs also searched through the entire cargo and baggage but found no explosives.

Airport authorities also searched the other Delta Airlines aircraft, flight DL630 which was bound for Detroit, Michigan via Nagoya, Japan just to make sure that there were no explosives onboard the aircraft.

After the search proved negative for explosives, airport authorities cleared the two flights for takeoff. Flight DL630 which was scheduled to leave at 6:45 a.m. was delayed by half an hour while DL172 was able to depart on time.

The caller spoke in Filipino and used a local line, indicating that the call was made from within the NAIA complex, said an MIAA source who requested anonimity for lack of authority to speak on the matter. A check of MIAA’s phone system showed that no such call came through the trunkline.

The caller made two calls, 10 minutes apart, said the source, who was at NAIA 1 at the time and was privy to police response to the threat.

The call came just as two Delta planes, both parked at the NAIA ramp overnight, were being readied for their early-morning flights.

Apart from Flight 172, Delta’s Manila-Nagoya-Detroit flight DL 630, also a 747 that was set for an earlier flight, was also at the tarmac and already open for check-in at the time.

Teams from the Philippine National Police and the separate Airport Police Department deployed K9 units to inspect both aircraft. The sweep took around an hour and the inspection cleared the two planes of any threat.

MIAA said the threat did not cause any disruption to the operations at the terminal or alarm the passengers.

An investigation was underway to trace the caller.

Jose Angel Honrado, Manila International Airport Authority (MIAA) general manager, said airport personnel received the call at around 3:40 am Saturday and said that the bomb was planted in the cargo section of the plane.

“As a standard procedure, the Airport Police responded, the PNP Aviation Security Group responded, chineck yung cargo sa eroplano, wala naman nakitang bomb,” Honrado said.

Delta Airlines flight 171 was scheduled for departure at 6:45 am but was able to fly out at 7:21 am due to the incident. (PNA)

Only a few weeks after Delta Airlines made headlines for pulling its hub out of Memphis, low-cost carrier Frontier Airlines has announced that it will bring its service to Memphis International Airport in March of next year.

The Denver-based airline will offer four non-stop flights to Denver, as well as open connections to San Francisco, Seattle/Tacoma, Phoenix, San Diego, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Portland, and six other western cities.

“Today’s exciting announcement from Frontier Airlines is the beginning of a new era of affordable airfare choices for our passengers,” said Jack Sammons, chairman of the Memphis-Shelby County Airport Authority Board of Commissioners. “I am confident Frontier’s direct service to Denver will be warmly embraced by passengers in our region.”

BLOOMINGTON, Minn. – By late afternoon on Tuesday, there was still no sign of the 9-year-old Minneapolis boy who managed to sneak through security and a Delta ticket gate before landing in Las Vegas.

He made the move on Thursday, and on Tuesday, a judge in Nevada had heard his case.

“If there is no domicile in Nevada a child is usually transferred back to the state, their home state, where there’s further proceedings,” said presiding judge Cynthia Giuliani of Clark County Nevada. “I’m prohibited from speaking factually on any case that comes before me. These are very sensitive cases in the juvenile system.”

KARE 11 has confirmed that Hennepin County is investigating the case. Delta Airlines and the TSA continue their investigations into the incident to try and figure out how the boy sneaked through cracks in the security system.

“To think that some 9-year-old kid could sneak on a plane is appalling. It’s scary,” said Mike Scorti, of Cincinnati, who was waiting for the rest of his buddies to arrive at MSP before continuing on to a vacation.

“It might be good that it has happened because it’ll help maybe tighten security a little bit more and maybe we’ll learned from this young man, I don’t know,” Scorti’s friend Skip Campbell added.
