Delta-Virgin JV Gets DOT Nod

The
Delta Airlines Inc.

(
DAL

) stock got positive reactions from the market to the U.S.
Department of Transportation’s (DOT) approval of its tie up with
Virgin Atlantic for better flight offerings between the U.S. and
U.K. The approval, which was seen as the final hurdle to the
trans-Atlantic joint venture (JV), came within a month of the
tentative nod from DOT.

Looking back, in Dec 2012, Delta proposed to acquire a 49%
stake in British carrier Virgin Atlantic from Singapore Airlines.
The acquisition closed in Jun 2013 after the U.S. Department of
Justice and European Commission cleared the deal.

Now, with the DOT nod, the JV will promote competition within
the U.S. and U.K. markets and in turn benefit customers. The
transport service regulator also noted that the JV will offer
customers with more travel options between the cross Atlantic
nations, in particular the New York and London market.

Currently, New York-London is the most lucrative business
market in the world for passenger carriers that target business
customers within the route. The route is currently being
dominated by British Airways and American Airlines.

Delta and Virgin Atlantic will also work together to optimise
their network opportunities and operate 32 daily flights between
North America and U.K. The trans-Atlantic amalgamation will
subsequently give Delta more control over the New York-London
route and the second spot in this market with nine daily
roundtrip flights.

Per the terms of the JV agreement between Delta and Virgin
Atlantic, both carriers will share the expenses and revenues of
the flights. Delta holds a commanding position in the U.S. market
while Virgin Atlantic enjoys hefty slots at the popular Heathrow
Airport.

The deal provides Virgin an opportunity to slash losses, while
for Delta it’s an opening to strengthen its operations on some of
the busiest routes on either side of the Atlantic.  However,
we believe the Delta-Virgin Atlantic alliance will benefit
customers the most, who will gain from expanded and enhanced
flight connectivity to key markets, better pricing, seating
facilities and suitable booking options.

Flight forced to make landing at Logan

MANCHESTER, N.H. (AP) – Authorities say a Delta airlines flight from Manchester, N.H., to Atlanta was forced to make an unscheduled landing in Boston over concern about an odor of fumes in the cabin.

Flight 1941 left Manchester-Boston Regional Airport at about 7:15 a.m. Friday.

Deputy Airport Director Brian O’Neil said a concern about an odor of fumes or possibly smoke caused the flight to be diverted to Logan Airport, where the plane landed safely. The Boeing-MD 88 can carry 142 people.

No one was hurt. It wasn’t immediately known what type of problem there was on the plane and whether it would continue on to Atlanta.

Delta Flight From Manchester, NH Makes Emergency Landing At Logan Airport

BOSTON (CBS) – A Delta Airlines flight made an emergency landing at Logan Airport Friday morning.

Flight 1941 left Manchester, New Hampshire at 7:10 a.m. heading for Atlanta, when it was forced to land at 7:44 a.m. at Logan because of a report of fumes on board, according to Massport.

144 passengers and 5 crew members were on the MD-88 jet.  No one was hurt.

“Right when we took off, a smell of something burning appeared. But after 10 mins seem to go away. For safety reasons (of course) they redirected us to Boston to investigate the problem.” passenger Jade Jamros of Salem told WBZ-TV via Twitter.

Massport spokesman Richard Walsh said the flight “landed without incident.”

Passengers were taken from the plane on the taxiway to the terminal in buses.

The jet was later towed away for an inspection and passengers were re-booked on new flights.

The FAA says it is investigating the incident.

Dangriga, Belize (PRWEB) September 19, 2013

Delta Airlines and United Airlines are offering new non-stop services to Belize City, making Belize even more accessible for travelers departing from Los Angeles and Newark this winter.

Taking advantage of the West Coast market to Belize, Delta Airlines will be offering convenient non-stop service from Los Angeles (LAX) to Belize City (BZE) on Saturdays starting December 21st, 2013. The Boeing 737-800 aircraft flying this route will have 160 seats available. Delta is the only airline offering the convenience of non-stop service between Los Angeles and Belize City. Flights depart at approximately 12am, and land in Belize City at 7am. The new route complements Delta’s existing services between Belize City and Atlanta, demonstrating the airline’s commitment to the Central American region.

To meet the growing need for non-stop flights from Newark to Belize, United Airlines will be adding three more non-stop flights between Newark, NY (EWR) and Belize City, (BZE) resulting in an additional 354 seats per week for the December to January holiday season. Service will be on Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. Flights depart at 1pm and land at approximately 7pm.

Delta’s new Los Angeles to Belize City service is available for booking through http://www.delta.com. United Airlines Newark to Belize City service is available on http://www.unitedairlines.com.

Delta Plans Larger Regional Planes for Montana

Sept. 16–BUTTE — Delta Airlines plans to bring larger regional planes to serve Montana and other areas and will start a nonstop flight between Billings and Atlanta next summer, top company officials said at the Economic Development Summit on Monday.

“We see a lot of opportunities for the Bakken,” said Eric Phillips, Delta’s vice president of pricing and revenue management for the Americas, who is originally from Lewistown. He was referring to the need for consultants and other business people to get to the oil fields in Eastern Montana and western North Dakota.

Delta CEO Richard Anderson said the company at some point will add larger planes to serve Montana, switching to 100-passenger regional planes from the current 50-passenger planes. He called the 50-seat regional planes uneconomical. He did not specify when the larger regional planes would be put in service.

Phillips said Delta originally started nonstop flights between Atlanta and Bozeman during summer and winter and now is doing it year round. In addition, Phillips said Delta last year added nonstop plane service during the summer between Atlanta and Missoula.

Delta also is considering adding a nonstop flight between John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York and Bozeman, he said.

Anticipatinig criticism about the lack of Delta flights into Montana, Anderson said Montana needs to increase more business travel to attract more flights. About 85 percent of the flights into Montana are tourism-related, while 15 percent are for business, he said.

Phillips said Delta’s air traffic in Montana is up 9 percent this fall over last fall.

In response to a question about high air fares, the two Delta executives said pricing is related to the cost of fuel. Jet fuel prices have quadrupled since 2000, they said.

Porsche, Delta Airlines Partner For V.I.P. Passengers Program

Porsche’s Atlanta branch previously teamed up with Delta Airlines for a program for its VIP passengers, which is now set to expand to other major cities.

According to NPR, Delta’s frequent-flying Medallion members get the perk of being shuttled in a Porsche Cayenne or Panamera on the airport’s tarmac in-between flights, so those VIP’s can make flight connections without a run through the terminal.

Following the success of the program in Atlanta, the airline is set to begin rolling out similar options in New York, Los Angeles and Minneapolis this month.

According to AutoBlog.com, Mercedes-Benz ran a program over the summer that offered purchasing and leasing incentives to MileagePlus Premier members of United Airlines, and the two are currently shuttling top fliers around Houston’s George Bush Intercontinental Airport in the automaker’s S-Class and GL-Class models.

Fitch Affirms Delta Airlines Seattle Project Bonds at 'B+'; Outlook Positive

CHICAGO–(BUSINESS WIRE)–

Fitch Ratings has affirmed the ratings of Industrial Development
Corporation (IDC) of the Port of Seattle’s special facilities revenue
bonds, series 2012 (Delta Air Lines, Inc. Project) at ‘B+’. The rating
Outlook is Positive.

KEY RATING DRIVERS

The rating takes into consideration the following factors: (i) Delta Air
Lines, Inc.’s (DAL’s) credit quality (ii) the structure of the
transaction (iii) Fitch’s view on the likelihood of affirmation of this
lease and ultimate recovery for bondholders in a potential
restructuring. Unlike most airport revenue bonds which are viewed as
unsecured claims of the airline, bondholders in this issue are secured
by the lease between DAL and the Port of Seattle for the property which
holds DAL’s hanger facility.

The issuing entity is the IDC of the Port of Seattle, but it has a
limited obligation on the rated bonds. These bonds are serviced
exclusively by the lease payments from DAL under its financing lease
agreement with the IDC, and DAL also provides an unsecured guarantee.
Furthermore, the bond is secured by the original lease agreement between
DAL and the Port of Seattle for the hanger facility, which enables the
bond trustee to re-lease the facility to a new tenant if DAL decides to
reject the lease in a potential bankruptcy. Accordingly, Fitch believes
that recovery for bondholders in these notes would be higher than DAL
unsecured debt in the event DAL rejected this lease in a potential
restructuring. While this supports recovery in a downside scenario,
Fitch’s base case view is that DAL would likely affirm this lease
obligation in a potential filing (as it did before when Northwest filed
in 2005) given the strategic importance of SEA to DAL. Although SEA is
not a hub or major airport for DAL, it is an important gateway for the
airline on the west coast and a profit center for its maintenance
services.

Fitch has affirmed the following:

Industrial Development Corporation (IDC) of the Port of Seattle special
facilities revenue refunding bonds, series 2012

(Delta Air Lines, Inc. Project):

–$66 million due April 1, 2030 at ‘B+’.

Fitch currently rates Delta Air Lines, Inc. as follows:

–Issuer Default Rating ‘B+’;

–$1.2 billion senior secured revolving credit facility due 2016
‘BB+/RR1’;

–$1.4 billion senior secured term loan due 2017 ‘BB+/RR1’.
