Delta Airlines’ decision to dramatically change its Frequent Flier award system — basing it on dollars spent rather than mileage accumulated — could very well be a game-changer for the other major domestic airlines.


For years — and American Airlines originated the customer incentive program back in the 1980s — you were awarded points based on mileage accrued on your trip. A round-trip 3,000-mile flight resulted in 3,000 points in your frequent flier account that would lead, hopefully, to a free ticket once you traveled some 25,000 miles or so.

FBI searching for person who temporarily blinded Delta Airlines pilot with laser

The FBI is searching for the person who injured a Delta Airlines pilot when the plane’s cockpit was illuminated by a laser beam as the airliner was landing at a New York airport. 

On Tuesday, Delta Flight #1102 was heading toward LaGuardia Airport just before 8 p.m. when flight crew reported a green laser beam entering the cockpit twice, authorities said. One of the two pilots was injured, causing flash blindness and “severely disrupting his vision,” the FBI said. 

“Laser incidents are often viewed as harmless. This couldn’t be further from the truth,” FBI Assistant Director-in-Charge George Venizelos said in a statement Friday. “Our paramount concern is the safety of aircraft passengers and we are asking anyone who knows anything to contact us.”

Tuesday’s crime follows a string of similar incidents in the New York City area within the past few months. 

In January, a United Airlines pilot experienced flash blindness from a laser authorities say originated from Staten Island. The incident occurred as the flight was landing at LaGuardia Airport. In December 2013, a JetBlue pilot was temporarily blinded by a laser as the aircraft approached John F. Kennedy Airport.

Anyone with information on these incidents is urged to call the FBI at 212-384-1000. A $10,000 reward is available for information that leads to the arrest of anyone involved in these crimes. Tipsters may remain anonymous.

Eastern Iowa Airport fire: Passengers describe scene

CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL) –
Bob Greenwood was flying out of the Eastern Iowa Airport on his way to a conference when he and his wife had to de-board the plane due to a fire in the back.

“They did a great job of evacuating,” said Greenwood, who lives in Waterloo. “Everybody came off the plane calm. The steps were there. There was help from the ground crew of getting people down the steps and off the plane.”

Public safety officers say the fire was in the auxiliary power unit, or APU. That’s a piece of equipment near the tail of the plane that powers the electrical systems.

Crews shut off power to the APU and the fire went out — thanks to the employees’ training.

“We’ve all gone through airport firefighting school and have monthly training and then annual re-certification for aircraft firefighting,” said Kenneth Washburn, public safety commander at the Eastern Iowa Airport.

Public safety officers respond to planes when safety sensors are triggered. While actual fires are rare, they do happen.

“Occasionally we’ve had a few, like today,” said Washburn. “But not very often.”

Greenwood was glad the three crew members and the other 49 passengers were all able to get off the plane safely.

He’s a frequent flier, but this was a new experience.

“I’ve flown probably a million miles on various airlines over the past 20, 25 years, and have never had anything like this happen before,” said Greenwood.

The Delta flight was heading to Detroit.

Some travelers, like Greenwood and his wife, booked new flights from other airports. Others waited for a new flight out of Cedar Rapids.

The plane was taken in for maintenance and repairs.

Officials aren’t sure what started the fire.

Carlene Vital of Chattanoogan’s for Reliable Transportation also asked that Delta Airlines officials be invited to Chattanooga to discuss upgrading the service.

Ms. Vital included comments from a host of local airline travelers on the subject.

Gentlemen and Ladies,

On behalf of the over 200 signers of the attached petition titled, Chattanoogan’s for Reliable Transportation and the over 250 Facebook supporters, we would like to challenge you to work with Delta Airlines and its carriers to improve air service in Chattanooga.

Understandably, reliable and predictable air service is impacted by many factors including weather, maintenance, scheduled delays, etc. We accept an occasional interruption. However, the public’s tolerance has reached maximum frustration. The absence of reliable and predictable service is constantly impairing business connections and travelers who want the convenience of the Chattanooga Airport. The ability to schedule flights and meet connecting service has become impossible and the ability to return from Atlanta has become totally unpredictable.

We hereby request, in an effort to make Chattanooga Airport a viable option for travel, that this Board and the management of the airport begin immediate dialogue with Delta Airlines and its carriers to improve public service. Wing panel missing from Delta flight from Orlando International Airport


ORLANDO, Fla. –

A Delta Airlines plane lost part of its wing during a flight from Orlando to Atlanta Sunday.

The crew of Delta Flight 2412 reported the panel flew off while in flight.

“Actually, I thought we were going to crash,” said Christian Crossley, who was a passenger on the plane.

There were 179 passengers and six crew members on board.

Crossley was seated in seat 25-C next to his wife and dog when he heard what he thought was the landing gear going down.

He said he immediately knew something else was going on.

“There was a lot of panic in there, a lot of people were gasping and turning around and saying ‘Oh my God, what’s going to happen?'” Crossley said.

Crossley says the pilot assured the passengers he could land the plane, but then Crossley says the the pilot was brutally honest and said he couldn’t promise anything beyond that.

The plane landed safely and without incident at Atlanta’s Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport.

A Delta spokeswoman said the plane is a Boeing 757, but he could not say how old the aircraft is.

Officials are trying to determine what caused the panel to fly off.

“He had no way of steering once we landed either, he said if he didn’t hit the runway straight on then we would be in trouble,” Crossley said

The plane landed safely at Atlanta’s Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport, but had to be towed to the gate.

Delta Airlines plane from Orlando loses part of wing during flight


ORLANDO, Fla. –

A Delta flight from Orlando landed safely in Atlanta after declaring an emergency because a part of the plane’s wing was missing.

The Federal Aviation Administration says Flight 2412, with 179 passengers and six crew members, landed without incident about 7:10 p.m. Sunday at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport.

The airplane, a Boeing 757, stopped on the runway and was towed to the gate.

After the flight landed, Delta officials told the FAA that a four-foot by eight-foot panel from one of the airplane’s wings was missing.

“Crew members aboard Flight 2412 reported an access panel had come off the plane’s wing while in flight,” said Delta spokesman Anthony Black.

The FAA is investigating.

There was no word from Delta on how many passengers were on the plane.

No injuries were reported.

Delta Airlines Links Silicon Beach, Austin With New Flight

Delta Air Lines announced Monday that it has launched a new, daily onnstop flight between Los Angeles International and Austin, Texas, to specifically connect the Silicon Beach startup community with the growing, technology community in Austin. According to Delta, the move–which is expected to start on June 16th–is part of an effort connect Los Angeles with all of the key, U.S. technology markets through its gateway at LAX. Delta said the serviec to Austin will be operated using Delta Boeing 717 aircraft. Delta says it will now connect the “growing Silicon Beach tech and startup community” with all of the major tech centers in the United States.

Delta Airlines Plane Loses Wing Access Panel Midflight, Lands Safely

Passengers and crew travelling inside a Delta Airlines flight from Orlando to Atlanta had a few anxious moments when one of the plane’s wing access panels got dislodged midflight. The Delta Airlines Flight 2412 with 179 passengers and six crew members landed safely at Atlanta’s Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport following the dislodgement, CNN reports. The plane was a Boeing 757-232, delivered in 1992. It bore registration number N675DL.

Delta Airlines spokesperson Anthony Black called the incident “highly unusual” while adding that the problem was a minor one and that the dislodgement did not affect the “plane’s ability to fly or operable change in flight.” After the aircraft landed at Atlanta, it was inspected by FAA officials, reports AVHerald

As the norm is, there were people aboard who managed to grab photographs of the damage to the wing. The photograph above was captured by David Watterson, who was aboard the flight. According to him, just as he was dozing off midflight, he heard a big boom. Following this, he observed that a large section of the plane’s wing was exposed and there was hydraulic fuel leaking. He added that all the passengers inside the aircraft remained calm but were at the same time concerned to see a “big chunk of the plane missing”. He was all praise for the onboard crew members who according to him handled the situation professionally.

The incident with Delta Airlines Flight 2412 is the latest in a string of aviation related mishaps being reported over the course of the past week. It started with the mystery regarding the fate of the Malaysia Airlines Flight 270 which to date, remains missing ever since its disappearance on March 8. Speculation is rife on what could have happened to the passengers and crew of that ill-fated flight.

This was followed by the aborted takeoff by US Airways Flight 1702 at Philadelphia that injured 2 passengers. The takeoff was aborted due to a tire burst following which the aircraft suffered a nose collapse. Images and videos from this crash were widely posted on various social networking websites including a selfie taken by a passenger that went viral.

Further details regarding the reasons behind the dislodging of the wing access panel on Flight 2412 would only be ascertained once officials complete the investigation.
